This particular model was made around mid to late judging by date codes, putting it fairly later in the life of the socket 7 standard. This board has a VIA chip-set and is marked MS, but if you search for that online you turn up a board that looks almost identical but has an Intel chip-set instead. It is a late socket 3 board that supports fast chips and the Pentium Overdrive. This is the only mark on the board that identifies anything about it, apparently it is version 1. Modern APUs contain everything in this diagram and more except the main system memory, older systems had the memory controller and GPU in the North bridge chip on the main board. It would probably suite running something like NetBSD which tends to require much less resources and can take advantage of the second processor.
MSI MS-6153 – motherboard – ATX – Socket 370 – i440BX
Unlike most implementations of the AMD supported Super7 motherboard standard, Socket is being approached with a more high-end approach, most motherboards featuring the same basic configuration as their more expensive slot-1 counterparts, with a few more features to keep up to date with the times. After all on-board graphics is all about reducing the cost. If there was a problem they could use these instead or in addition to the standard BIOS beep codes.
I may be able to get a replacement, or I might have to hack this chip to disconnect the internal battery and attach my own external battery. In the past Biostar have made boards for OEMs as well as the high-end, mid and lower-end of the market.
This is likely due to limited memory bandwidth and perhaps the way the old cache on these boards worked. Like many ms-6135 Tyan and Supermicro motherboards, the MSI features an on-board PC speaker ms-6513 can be disabled via a jumper, however for those users that want a little more than the annoying beeps out of your PC speaker, the on-board Creative Labs ES PCI sound processor will fill in the ms-66153.
Windows 95 did run on machines, but not really all that well. The only real disadvantages of the discrete graphics card are slightly increased loading times, and slower access to Graphic memory. On-board GPUs have a significant advantage in some areas, such as the CPU being able to write draw essentially directly to the frame buffer, and the GPU being able to read texture data directly from system memory.
Socket 3 is interesting as it is where the CPU designs started to really diverge depending on the manufacturer, but the chips all still ran on the same boards.
Due to the fact that the Socket Celerons are clock-locked, MSI auto-detects the clock-multiplier of the installed CPU and doesn’t even bother with allowing you the evr of configuring the inconfigurable setting, makes sense.
Something I thought odd at first was the choice of a VIA chip-set, but thinking about it VIA made some of the better chip-sets of that era, often out-performing other manufacturers offerings.
The main annoyance is with the silk screen reference being so distant from the jumpers, and not having very descriptive names. From the perspective of a technician this board is pretty good.
