If you are the only person with physical access to your computer then the methods below may be appropriate. Is there a method to make the change permanently? Also, it is a little more obvious. See the sbp2 driver page for more information. Another note on FireWire security:

The traditional methods available in the libraw API require the CPU to copy the data from the kernel’s memory space raw1934 the user space of the application. Shouldn’t by now some solution have been found? Only Kino, Cinelerra, or the dvconnect utility from the libdv project can transmit DV back to the camera.
So what you are are saying “Stefan Richter” is that I can swift to another distrubution? However, most chipsets have a limited number of isochronous reception DMAs implemented in their link layer: It may be worth a arw1394 if you have not already done so. If the hotplug step succeeds, you should see messages ending in success in your kern.
I use Ubuntu Breezy and the Kino version currently released with Breezy. Is the camcorder set to VCR or playback mode? Unfortunately so is the legacy ieee stack, and guess which one starts up by default on my box?
It just doesn’t make sense to give xnd users complete control for all firewire devices, that’s not how device management is supposed to work in the kernel.
Running Kino as root does not strangely get around this problem.
But raaw1394 could also be done via the capabilities based approach. But, I was too late to come across this forum. What do you think?
What is non-polling blocking capturing? If you trust your computer, then people can already run kino etc. There is a howto at www.
You can check the documentation that comes with your application. Older versions of hotplug and Linux drivers only recognized a SBP-2 storage device and loaded the corresponding sbp2 driver; however, it did not register any devices with the SCSI subsystem.
FireWire updates
You can check that you have the correct parameters: Development status of these drivers is posted at wiki. Actually, a cheap setup to achieve 1 by 4 is to have two FireWire controllers in the PC and connect them.
Stefan Richter [ You are meaning dv when you write “video I agree we need to improve the kernel interface, and the issue has come up in the linuxdevel mailing list. I seem to vaguely remember that worked just fine when I used SuSE It automatically determines if you have video or Xvideo extensions for optimal performance.
FireWire security will be addressed in future releases by means of new improved kernel drivers: Figuring out which cards will ix is kinda like a witch hunt!
